Natural
ways to normalize your blood pressure Blood
pressure is always given as two
numbers, the
systolic and diastolic pressures. Both are important. Usually they are
written one above or before the other, such as 120/80 mmHg. When the
two measurements are written down, the systolic pressure is the first
or top number, and the diastolic pressure is the second or bottom
number (for example, 120/80). If your blood pressure is 120/80, you say
that it is “120 over 80.”
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a blood pressure reading of
140/90 mmHg (mmHg = millimeters of mercury, a unit for measuring
pressure) or higher. Normal blood pressure is a reading of
less
than 120/80 mmHg. Hypotension, or abnormally low blood
pressure,
is blood pressure that is lower than 90/60 mmHg. Some doctors
now
classify those who have blood pressure readings higher than 120/80
mm/Hg, but lower than 140/90 mm/Hg as "pre-hypertensive".
Nearly 1 in 3 American adults has high blood pressure. Once
high blood
pressure develops, it usually lasts a lifetime. The good news is that
it can be treated and controlled. Of course, the best method
of treatment is prevention. Though people of all ages
can
have low blood pressure, older adults seem to have a greater risk for
the condition. Hypotension is a medical concern only if it
causes
signs and/or symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, or, in extreme
cases, shock. Need more information on how to
